My name is Lauran and I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and when I was a young child my family moved into southern New Jersey.
When I saw my Grandfathers camera at 7 years old and was allowed to hold it, take a photo with it, and see that photo after developing I was hooked. Christmas 1972 I received a brand-new Kodak Instamatic with 6 film cartridges. Since film wasn’t cheap, I learned to be patient and wait for the perfect moment.
During my high school years, I took a class on photography which included the development of film. Our teacher sent us out to take photos once a week for 5 weeks. We got to go into the dark room and process each roll. That experience solidified my love for capturing moments on film. I became a school bus driver at 21, married, had 2 children, and divorced leaving me as a single Mom. My kids learned to expect the camera as we went wandering on weekends. I remember receiving a Pentax 35mm around 1995 for Christmas from my family.
When my daughter was 17, I ended up informally adopting her best friend and instantly becoming a Grammy. My camera was stolen when we had new carpet installed and the company told me to prove it. My camera was upgraded to a Kodak that Christmas from my family.
(January 2011 began the implosion and rebirth of my life. I was sick and ended up in the hospital for 24 days. I received a call that my Mom had passed. I had major surgery which I almost didn’t survive and I was diagnosed with cancer and told I needed chemo. There were more surgeries, chemo, and another cancer diagnosis. I am now a dual survivor.)
In 2012 I retired and moved to Kansas. One of the hardest things to do was leave my family, friends, and 5 grandkids behind. I couldn’t live without working so I found a job here as a school bus driver and a few years ago moved into the office as the morning dispatcher. I work from 5am to around 2:45pm which grants me time to follow my cameras.
Since moving to Kansas I have taken my passion for wandering and photography, blending them, creating some of the best images so far. This year I gave my oldest granddaughter a camera for her birthday because she has caught the photography bug. I have since upgraded my camera to a Canon T3i and a Canon T6. I’ve kept up wandering but now it’s only with my cameras. I thoroughly enjoy unplugging and heading out to where ever my eye and cameras lead me. I stop and leave my car to follow paths or simply open my window and capture sudden moments.
This past year I started Angel Inspired Photography and have started doing outdoor family photos. I’ve shown in Washington, Florida, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Michigan, and am currently showing at the Buttonwood Art Space and Jones Gallery both are located in Kansas City, Missouri.
My mission as a photographer is to bring joy, beauty, and awe-inspiring images to people who might never witness them. I also hope to encourage people to get out into the world and truly see their world.
